England struck three times and are in the World Cup quarter-finals; Cameroon went on strike twice and are out. This was a most extraordinary, almost mutinous tie, a searing, vituperative contest drenched in ugly incident and controversy with even a wild accusation of Fifa wanting England to win and therefore being racist. This was denied by Cameroon.

It was summed up in injury-time when a needless, brutal challenge by Cameroon substitute Alexandra Takounda caught Steph Houghton painfully high on the ankle. It became yet another incident that was referred by the video assistant referee but only a yellow card was issued.

Why? It felt by then that Chinese referee Qin Liang had had enough; that she was fearful that Cameroon may threaten to walk off for a third time; that she had had her fill of controversy and attention and even desired to placate them. The official had even pushed in the back at one stage by Cameroons Jeanette Yango but did not react.

It felt the same when Qin did not give a penalty after Fran Kirby was clearly fouled. Again she went to the side of the pitch to review the incident but only awarded a goal-kick. The VAR was used again and again with seven minutes of added time and a disjointed, chaotic match.

Where to start? There was - in chronological order - an elbow in the jaw of Nikita Parris, a spitting on the arm of Toni Duggan, a refusal to re-start the game, not once but twice by Cameroon, after one goal was given and another disallowed, that claim of racism, that penalty call, and that ugly tackle.

Paramount Pictures agrees new deal with London Resort theme park between Gravesend and Dartford

A 5 billion theme park set to open in Kent by 2024 has sensationally signed a new deal with Hollywood film studios Paramount Pictures almost two years to the day after their relationship collapsed.

The London Resort, set cover the size of 136 Wembley Stadiums on Swanscombe Peninsula between Gravesend and Dartford, will once again become home to attractions based on The Godfather, The Italian Job and Mission: Impossible after the shock announcement.

The future of the tourist attraction, which has had its opening date delayed four times, was thrown into doubt when it was revealed in 2017 the Hollywood studio would no longer lend its name to the attraction, which had been known as London Paramount until that point.

Ground investigations - the next step in designing Lower Thames Crossing

Highways England has today launched a comprehensive programme of Ground Investigations (GI) along the route of the Lower Thames Crossing.

Our programme of ground investigations and surveys in Kent, Essex and Thurrock will give engineers a clear picture of the type of soils, rock and groundwater along the proposed 14.5 mile route.

The information will help us design the structures required for the road including bridges and viaducts, embankments and cuttings. The studies are also vital to planning the construction of our tunnel under the Thames, which will be the world’s third-largest bored road tunnel.

The ground investigation programme is the next step in designing the new crossing, and is not the start of construction. Our findings will be published as part of our future planning application.

What is happening, and where?

Tests will be carried out at over 700 locations, including over 400 boreholes, ground water sampling and monitoring, shallow trial pits and a wide range of unobtrusive geophysical surveys.

We aim to start later this month and finish by the end of the year. Marine GI, which will focus on the ground beneath the River Thames, will begin later in the Summer.

Working in the community

Our priority is to carry out this programme of work in a way that will have the smallest possible impact on the nearby community and environment.

The majority of our work will be carried out during normal working hours, between Monday and Friday.

What is the Lower Thames Crossing?

The Lower Thames Crossing will connect communities, boost the economy and add vital extra resilience to the road network while reducing pressure on the existing Dartford Crossing.

It is the most ambitious road project since the M25 opened 30 years ago and will include the worlds third-largest bored road tunnel.

The new road will link the A2 and M2 in Kent with the A13 in Essex and the M25, and be made of: -Two 2.5 mile tunnels below the River Thames -14.5 miles of new road -New bridges, viaducts and underpasses -Improvements to the M25, A2 and A13

Last year, Highways England held its most significant public consultation on the proposed Lower Thames Crossing. Spanning 10-weeks from end-October to end-December 2018, the consultation received nearly 29,000 detailed responses with over 15,000 people attending a programme of 60 events.

The unprecedented level of feedback has been detailed and insightful. Highways England is now in the process of analysing the responses to incorporate the feedback into the plans and designs for the Lower Thames Crossing

2018 consultation and next steps for the Lower Thames Crossing

We are re-sending this email to you because links in the earlier email did not work. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, we have now fixed the problem and all links in this email are working correctly.

We've published an update on our latest plans and the responses we received during our ten-week statutory consultation, which closed at the end of 2018.

The public consultation on the Lower Thames Crossing received nearly 29,000 detailed responses, with nearly 15,000 people attending a programme of 60 events held over a ten-week period, with hundreds of thousands more engaging with the project online. The responses were detailed and insightful, providing unique perspectives. Many have raised important issues, and these will inform the continued development of the project.

There is significant support for our proposals with more than 80 per cent of respondents supporting the need for a new crossing and 70 per cent supporting the location.

We're now considering the consultation responses in detail as we continue to improve the design of the project. We'll also be using the information gathered from our ground investigations programme (which began this month) to ensure that our project is delivered in way that has the smallest possible impact on the nearby communities and environment.

To do this effectively, we will need more time to develop our planning application (Development Consent Order application) which we now plan to submit in summer 2020. This, however, does not impact the target road opening in 2027 as we've done more work to our schedule to speed up the construction programme.
